Among the millions of uninsured people in Texas are thousands with epilepsy, a chronic neurological disorder marked by unpredictable seizures. Minimizing the disorder’s impact on daily life requires regular access to specialized care and treatment. But in Texas — where state leaders oppose Medicaid expansion — many low-income Texans with epilepsy can’t qualify for Medicaid until their condition becomes severely debilitating. For years, local epilepsy nonprofits have tried to fill the access gap, offering free seizure clinics for the uninsured, but their capacity is limited.
