The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced Thursday that a video on the Alzheimer’s epidemic in South Texas co-produced by Univision and Public Health Watch has been nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy.
The 15-minute video was released online in both English and Spanish. It told the story of Lupita Casas, the caregiver for two elderly parents with dementia in the Rio Grande Valley. It was part of a multimedia project, published in February 2023, that examined the possible causes of a spike in the illness among the region’s mostly Latino residents.
The Public Health Watch article, written by Daisy Yuhas, noted that some 400,000 Texans suffer from Alzheimer’s or related disorders but that Texas was spending only $5 million a year on dementia-related programs – “far behind the efforts of other large states.” Four months after the article was published, the Texas Legislature boosted spending, but advocates said much more was needed to address the crisis.
The Univision video, “No Me Olvides,” (“Forget Me Not”) is nominated in the “Outstanding Feature Story in Spanish” category. Winners will be announced in late September.
